About Bahay San Jose
Bahay San Jose is an institution that caters to the differently-abled, particularly those who are severely afflicted, bed-ridden, and incapable of caring for themselves. It was founded in 1982 by Belgian Sister Ma. Paula Valeriana Baerts of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary - the same mover behind Tahanang Walang Hagdanan.

Bahay San Jose currently houses ten "angels" - individuals with severe cases of cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy. Many also suffer from other disabilities - sense impairment, mental retardation, poliomyelitis, and seizures - and other accompanying diseases, such as skin diseases, bedsores and infection.

The institution is supported by a food budget given by the House with No Steps Foundation, contributions from the children's relatives, and monetary or in-kind donations from local and foreign civic organizations or private individuals. Different institutions offer other forms of support by supplying caretakers on ojt (on-the-job-training), sending visitors on immersion, or sending seminarians to celebrate Sunday mass and provide spiritual guidance.
These visits are infrequent, however, and Bahay San Jose subsists on irregular and largely inadequate contributions. The hardworking and highly dedicated caretakers are given a minimal allowance. There are no professional doctos, nurses, or caregivers on the staff. The budget allocation for the food stands at 33 pesos a day for each child, and the quality of their meals can vary depending on their supplies. Both chronic and unexpected illnesses lead to frequent hospitalization and the costs of daily medication can go up to 600 pesos a week for single child. Bahay San Jose barely stays at float, and measures to reduce its vulnerability to economic and health risks are direly needed.
